We get some version of this question constantly: "I have no HR background — can I still get into HR?" The honest answer is yes, and Nigeria's HR field has more entry points than people assume. This is written for someone starting from genuinely zero, not someone already in HR looking to move up — for that, see our roadmap on building a thriving HR career.
Do You Need a Related Degree?
No — and this surprises people. Many working HR professionals in Nigeria have degrees in psychology, business administration, sociology, law, or entirely unrelated fields. What employers actually screen for at entry level is a demonstrated interest in people-and-process work, plus a recognised HR certification, more than the degree on your CV.
Building Foundational Knowledge
Before you apply anywhere, get functional literacy in four areas: recruitment and onboarding, Nigerian labour law basics, payroll fundamentals, and performance management. You do not need mastery — you need enough to hold a competent conversation about each in an interview.
Certification: Where CIPM Fits
The Chartered Institute of Personnel Management (CIPM) is Nigeria's recognised professional body for HR, and its certification is the single most common credential employers look for locally — often more than a foreign HR qualification for Nigeria-based roles. If you are serious about breaking in, working toward CIPM membership early is one of the highest-leverage moves you can make.
Getting Your First HR Role
Very few people walk straight into a "HR Manager" title. The realistic path is an HR Officer, HR Assistant, or HR Intern role — often at an SME, where you will touch every part of the function rather than one narrow slice, which is actually excellent for broad early learning.
Entry Points If You Have Zero Experience
Internships and structured bootcamps exist precisely to bridge this gap. Our own HR Operations Bootcamp is built for exactly this stage — a focused, practical entry point covering the fundamentals employers actually screen for, and once you are ready for the professional exam, our CIPM Study Assistant can help you prepare.
